ARTIST NOTES

John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States (1797-1801), is considered one of the most important early American leaders because of his role in shaping the nation’s founding principles, guiding it through its formative years, and establishing key precedents that influenced the presidency and American political culture.

John Adams was a brilliant thinker, a devoted patriot, and a principled leader remembered for his significant accomplishments but also his confrontational relationship with the media.

One of the most controversial aspects of Adams’s presidency was his handling of the media through the Alien and Sedition Acts (1798). The Sedition Act criminalized making “false, scandalous, or malicious” statements about the government or the president. Several newspaper editors were arrested and fined under the Sedition Act, including journalists aligned with the Democratic-Republican Party.

President Trump’s relationship with the media has been one of the most notable aspects of his political career. He has been very open to frequent media interactions in the spirit of transparency, while often calling out a section of traditional media for spreading misinformation, labeling them as "fake news".
